Hypnobirthing...hypno?! Hypnosis?! It sounds really weird, doesn't it...?!
It's not! Let me give you the details about what hypnobirthing is, and how it's delivered at Power of Mum (it's quite wordy, but I could go on about this forever...)
What is hypnobirthing?
In its simplest form, hypnobirthing is an incredibly detailed, evidence-focused antenatal programme based on logic and science. Case studies are looked at in forensic detail and results drawn from them to create a wonderful programme.
Hypnobirthing is not stage hypnosis - it uses the tools of a hypnotherapist and the power of words: remember the Kipling quotation "Words are the most powerful drug known to man." It does not guarantee a pain free birth: rather it is the most incredible opportunity to let go of any fears regarding birth, and build confidence every day.
Understanding the physiology of birth makes a massive difference to how couples approach labour (looking at the best way to help the muscles in the uterus work efficiently during birth is one of the most significant parts of the course.) A good awareness of the different systems within the body (sympathetic and parasympathetic) can enable that "lightbulb" moment for bump-holders and their birth partners.
Breathing and visualisation exercises are perhaps the most well-known part of hypnobirthing, but are only one piece of the puzzle. Of course I will teach you some amazing techniques, but these have to be practiced and understood alongside the entire course to be at their most effective.
Understanding the many and varied choices surrounding birth, the jargon you will hear around birth, birth statistics, the different caregivers you will interact with is another unique part of this course.
There is so much more to learn and explain - so come on one of my courses and let me make a profound difference to you, your partner and your baby.
Who is hypnobirthing suitable for?
I would expect a hypnobirthing teacher to say "everyone" - but that's because it's true!
- Hypnobirthing is not exclusively for "low-risk" pregnancies - it is for every kind of risk (and don't worry, we'll discuss what that language really means on my course);
- Hypnobirthing is not just for vaginal, spontaneous birth - induction (planned or unplanned), C-section (planned or unplanned), assisted delivery (forceps or ventouse - again we'll discuss all this) - everyone will benefit from the knowledge this course provides;
- Hypnobirthing is for sceptics - we love you! Scepticism is an entirely logical approach to the course, and I love your questions! Hypnobirthing doesn't work simply because we "believe" it will - its grounding in logic and science is what makes the difference.
- Hypnobirthing is for pregnant women AND THEIR PARTNERS. It is such a privilege to see couples working so closely together and getting excited about the birth together. All too often the birth partner can be left feeling like the one who just has to remember the birth bag, when we know that the energy and commitment they provide can make a profound difference to birth outcomes.
