Meet Becky, mum of 2 girls, keeper of a minimum of 3 jobs at any one time, specialist in all, lover of children and all round superstar! Read on to find out more about her and her passion for working with children...
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I run Arty Crafty Kidz for two classes a week, childmind for two days and one afternoon I assist at children’s yoga classes.
WHAT ABOUT AT HOME -WHAT’S THE SITUATION? KIDS?
I have 2 amazing girls: Isabelle will be 4 next month and Olivia is 8 on New Year’s Day. They both have asthma and are on daily medication. We have regular visits to consultants, respiratory nurses, GPs and occasionally A&E. It can be a huge juggle when doing three other work things too. My husband is amazing though and brings me up when it all gets too much.
WHAT WORK DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU HAD CHILDREN? HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?
All my experience is in early years: I’ve been a play specialist on a children’s ward in hospital, a Montessori teacher, a Nursery Manager to a nursery with 101 places! I had a place on a nursing degree but went to America and worked as an au pair: one thing led to another and the nursing didn’t happen, but health has always been an interest.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
In my 3 jobs I love seeing children excel and achieve whether that’s with confidence or learning a new skill. Therapeutic play is so important and even young children need to relax. Arts, crafts and messy play is something that children can do at their own rate and without having to achieve the perfect piece of art. I’m v ery lucky that my Childminding families are very understanding and have become good friends. They both also come to my classes, one comes to all.
WHAT DRIVES YOU TO KEEP YOU GOING ON THOSE BAD DAYS?
What drives me is that people want to come to my classes and I have lots of regulars. It’s also somewhere that children can get messy, mums can relax because there is no clean up, make friends and enjoy a cuppa!
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN HAVING A JOB AND BEING A MUM?
My biggest challenges are definitely my girls’ health and juggling work when they aren’t well or juggling appointments with them. I put a smile on my face (most of the time 😂)
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF (WORK OR HOME?)
Gosh that is a hard one! My family come first all of the time, and I’m so proud of my husband and what my girls achieve considering their health. I’m also proud of what I’ve achieved.
WHERE ARE YOU HOPING YOUR WORK WILL TAKE YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I’m planning on mixing my arts, crafts and messy play with yoga so will introduce a yogi Arty Crafty Class in the new year and continue teaching with yogibuds
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A BRAND NEW MOTHER?
Trust your instincts, listen to professionals but what’s right for one baby isn’t right for others (and for you). You must look after yourself because if you don’t, you can’t look after others.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO LOOK AFTER YOU?
Talk to my husband and good friends. Practise yoga. Oh and I enjoy something bubbly or grape-based!
